Crockett and Tubs: Screen Capture 1

Crockett and Tubs Last week I watched Michael Mann's Manhunter. It's a real gem of a movie starring William Peterson ( CSI Las Vegas ). Manhunter is essentially the prequel to Silence of the Lambs and was remade and titled Red Dragon in 2002. Although I really like Anthony Hopkins as the venerable Dr. Lecter, I have to say, Mann's highly stylized version from 1986 is still my favorite. All this Michael Mann business of course lead me to watching a few episodes of Miami Vice ( which I posted about here ) and so naturally I have been taking a few screen captures. Not really sure where I'm going with this, but I really liked this one which was only on screen for a second and is fitting with yesterday's post about surveillance.

It's interesting how these things all tie themselves together. Last semester at MICA, we had a few visiting artists who sort of hit the nail on the head. Flickr searches, surveillance in cinema, photo archives--it's all beginning to meld together. The above image was captured on my laptop screen at 1440 x 900 pixels. As you can see the actual image area is cropped to TV format, and additionally cropped by the original editor for the in-camera surveillance effect. Not too may pixels to work with!

I am becoming more and more obsessed with searching the depths of flickr.com for something special. This morning I was thinking about that old adage: "f/8 and be there." So I did a quick search and low and behold, 91,000 results!

It's search results like these that I feel warrant a special place on the Internet. So, I made a page. Check out the new search on my "Flickr Searches" section

Also, on a more technical note, I have turned on commenting for these searches. So comment away!

IMG_1234 is a short project I made a couple weeks ago. Posted on the site here for your viewing pleasure. I am continually excited by "short" projects. Recently I became a fan of Cory Arcangel's piece depicted below.

I find this sort of "one mouse click" art is pretty interesting. I also really like how Cory titled the piece. Following his title I was able to replicate the work in PShop with minimal effort. Of course my version would be titled "CS4."

Photoshop CS: 110 by 72 inches, 300 DPI, RGB, square pixels, default gradient "Spectrum", mousedown y=1098 x=1749.9, mouse up y=0 x=4160 (2008)

Alex Mauer Releasing 8-Bit Music on NES Carts

I find this sort of thing very amusing. An artist by the name of Alex Mauer has been releasing "LPs" on 8-Bit NES cartridges. He is also involved in the Playpower.org project, which I also find pretty interesting.

Enjoy
