Great Websites: World Press Photo

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I just wanted to throw this one up here as one of the coolest sites I have seen in a while. I love the layout of the video and photo, not to mention some really amazing photography.

Check it out for yourself here.

Third Person Singular

Friday, March 28th, 2008

These days I feel like one of those guys who talks in the third person all the time. Micah has this, or Micah is a great so and so….

The other day I sent in my letter of intent along with my deposit. So it’s official, I am going. Now comes the fun. This past weekend I spent some time with my favorite financial advisor and we went over my last years taxes. By the end of the day we had them just about finished! I was able to file for my FAFSA and this morning I sent in my MICA Application for Financial Aid.

the scholarship I received is pretty good, but I will still need to take out a loan for the balance of my tuition and some other expenses. Hopefully it will all work out.

So begins the search for a suitable place to live in Baltimore (The Greatest City in America). There was a really funny piece about Baltimore and The Wire on the blog “Stuff White People Like.” Check it out here. It’s so true! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say that very line: “It’’s the best show on television!”

So, I started looking for places to live near MICA and realized there is no real reason that I have to be within walking distance of the school. It would be nice, but I think some of the other neighborhoods might be more my style. So I am checking out the neighborhoods near Paterson Park and the harbor areas. Looking online from another country is pretty frustrating. So, I think I am going to wait to REALLY look until I get back to the states next month.

Wow, I can’t believe we leave here in less than 20 days! I have lived here on this island for nearly two years now! I hope my dogs don’t miss the beach to much.

And, speaking of the dogs, check out this short video I made of them to show my sister how much faster they can run than her two pups!

10 minutes of shooting video with Kendra’s point and shoot.

10 minutes of editing in iMovie

1 Stolen song from my iTunes library (c’mon Apple, you make it too easy!)

20 Minutes to upload to my .Mac Web Gallery

Enjoy -

PS - Yes, that is my current house and property. Man I am going to miss this place!

The Marlboro Marine

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Madiastorm and the LA Times have produced a stunning multimedia piece. Be sure to check out all three parts, and grab a few Kleenex before you begin. PDN wrote up a small blog post about htis and they are absolutely right in how well it was produced. My favorite part is the lack of the Ken Burns effect, which has become way to overused these days. Nice hard cuts!

Metro Collective

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

I think I am onto a theme today, pointing out cool photo related blogs…

Metro Collective is a collective of photographers centered around the Washington DC area. They produce some amazing work individually and as a collective they have a very congruent style.

I had the pleasure of working with them to produce their website about a year ago and we are now considering some minor modifications. Since I wrapped things up on the site they have added a blog that seems to have some potential. We have a few ideas floating around and I am eager to hear comments on the current look and feel of the site.

So comment away!

Along the same vein, one of the best multimeda photojournalism sites out there, Meidastorm.org, has won an emmy. Check out their latest blog post here.

More Cool Stuff on YouTube

Friday, June 29th, 2007

This is just cool. Max Tyrie shot this entire video using a digital SLR and over 4000 flyer posters for a submission to the Modest Mouse video contest.

Jim Lo Scalzo’s New Book

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

I saw this on John Harrington’s blog, so I won’t rewrite what he has written. But this stuff is just too good and needs to be posted everywhere. Jim Lo Scalzo has not only created what looks to be a fascinating upcoming book, but he has made a wonderful multimedia production as a sort of trailer to the book. Check out this two part series on YouTube!

A Short Time Lapse and New Multimedia Section

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Thanks to Brightcove.com I am launching a Multimedia section for this website. For now, there will be just a few short videos in there, but soon I will be adding more and more. Each video will wind up on the main Multimedia page, and there will be a special page for each video featuring selected still images and text. Enjoy!

Oh, and here is a short (very short) time lapse movie I made a while back. This was shot down on our beach in Dominica.

Brightcove Rocks!

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

I’ve been playing with Brightcove for the past 24 hours and all I can say is, Brightcove rocks! Once I figured out how to set up a Pro account, which by the way, is mostly free, I found a whole new world of customizations available and possibilities.

This is really a great web service for multimedia people. You can essentially set up your own Internet TV station in a matter of minutes. Below is the same slideshow from yesterday’s post. This time I used the ApertureToFilemaker Pro plugin to quickly export a small set of images to Final Cut Pro. I haven’t built in any Ken Burns yet, as that takes a little more know how in Final Cut, but mostly I was just interested in creating a 16:9 format player in Brightcove and getting some content up and running.

I am thinking about doing a series of posts having to do with multimedia photojournalism. There is a possible series of projects to do here in Dominica, so if that all goes well, I will be sure to blog all about it. Once the content begins to accumulate I will likely create a special page just for multimedia content.
